Being at Sundance is like entering a serene sanctuary where time seems to pause, and each moment brims with inspiration.”

Why it’s awesome

A Tribute to Preservation and Art

Sundance was founded in 1969 by actor and director Robert Redford. From the start, Redford envisioned Sundance as a place where the natural beauty of Utah’s wilderness could coexist with artistic expression. This commitment to preservation is evident in every corner of the resort. From its sustainable architecture to its focus on supporting local artisans, Sundance stands as a model of how recreation and conservation can intertwine seamlessly.

The origin of the Sundance Film and Music Festival further highlights this vision. Launched as a way to celebrate independent filmmakers and musicians, the festival has become an iconic event, showcasing creativity and talent from around the world while staying rooted in the artistic spirit of Sundance.

The resort spans 5,000 acres of protected wilderness, offering visitors pristine landscapes and an escape from the chaos of daily life. Sundance isn’t about high-rise lodges and noisy après-ski parties—instead, it’s about connecting with nature, people, and creativity.

Terrain & Snow

The Sundance ski area may not be the largest in Utah, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for with charm and exceptional trail quality. Roughly half of the terrain is designated for advanced or expert skiers, with the more challenging trails located higher up the mountain. The advanced terrain is found on the “back mountain” which is served by Red’s Lift and Flathead Lift. Looping Red’s Lift grants access to a variety of blue and black trails as well as steep, double black diamond runs like Vertigo and Wonderboy.

For beginners, the lower mountain offers plenty of milder, well-maintained trails served by Jake’s Lift and Wildwood Lift. The layout is rather thoughtful and ensures beginner and advanced trails are well-separated, making Sundance an excellent choice for groups with mixed skill levels. Its manageable size also makes meeting up on the slopes far easier than at larger resorts, allowing everyone to enjoy the experience together.

Sundance is also one of the few resorts in Utah to offer night skiing. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday you will find most of the front mountain illuminated until 9:00 PM.

Local Cuisine

The Tree Room

The Tree Room is an award-winning fine dining destination that beautifully showcases Native American art from Robert Redford’s personal collection. Its seasonal gourmet menu features dishes like King Salmon, Elk Osso Buco, Rabbit Confit, Pepper Steak, and other creations crafted with locally sourced ingredients. As the first building at Sundance Mountain Resort, the Tree Room was uniquely constructed around a living tree, which, though now gone, remains a centerpiece of its history. Between its ambiance and exquisite cuisine, the Tree Room offers an unforgettable dining experience.

The Foundry Grill

For a more casual dining option, head to The Foundry Grill. Located in an old foundry building on the resort’s property, this restaurant offers a cozy, rustic atmosphere and serves up hearty American-style dishes made with locally-sourced ingredients. Enjoy one of the best burgers in Utah. Foundry Grill also serves up breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch.

Owl Bar

Originally located in Wyoming and frequented by infamous outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (hence its name), this bar was dismantled piece by piece and reassembled at Sundance Mountain Resort – complete with bullet holes still visible in its walls. You’ll find live music on select weekends and high quality drinks to enjoy after a day on the slopes.

Sundance Lodging

Lodging options are limited to either staying at the Sundance Mountain Resort, a cabin, or private home for rent. There are many homes and cabins available in the Sundance Ski Area, some of which are large enough to sleep up 20 people and contain 7+ bedrooms.
