Snowbird Ski Resort, Utah – A Comprehensive Guide to World Class Terrain & Snow

Snowbird, Utah should be your first pick if you are a Powder Hound planning a Utah ski trip. This is where you will find the largest vertical drop in the Salt Lake City area at 3,240 feet and over 35% of terrain being advanced to expert. Due to geographic positioning in Little Cottonwood Canyon Snowbird Ski area gets more snow than other Utah resorts, averaging 500 inches annually.

“The descent from Hidden Peak is pure exhilaration-deep powder, steep runs, and views which make you feel truly alive”

Why it’s awesome

Greatest Snow on Earth®

Utah’s trademarked “Greatest Snow on Earth®” slogan isn’t just marketing—it’s science. The powder has a perfect light and dry composition that feels divine to ski through. The state’s unique geography is to thank for its legendary powder. As Pacific storms cross the Sierra Nevada, they lose much of their moisture, leaving lighter, drier snow by the time they reach Utah’s Wasatch Mountains. This low moisture snow is soft, fluffy, and perfect for skiing. The Wasatch Range’s high elevation, cold temperatures, and ideal orientation ensure heavy snowfall and preserve its quality. With consistent storms, dry air, and perfect terrain, Utah’s snow has earned its reputation among skiers and snowboarders worldwide.

Snowbird Ski Resort enjoys a premium location in Little Cottonwood Canyon. This unique geographical position gives Snowbird, and its neighbor Alta, an edge over other resorts in the Salt Lake City area—literally and figuratively. While all ski resorts in the Wasatch Range are blessed with snowfall, Snowbird consistently receives copious amounts—an average of 500 inches of snow annually.

Aerial Tram: A Must-Ride

No trip to Snowbird is complete without riding the resort’s Aerial Tram. The signature red and blue Snowbird trams whisk you to the top of Hidden Peak at an elevation of 11,000 feet. The views are just as captivating as the ride down you’re about to experience. The Cirque Traverse has a variety of runs that range from pretty steep to absolutely gnarly. You can ride along and decide where to drop in.

Check out the trail map and plan your lines. Make sure to check out these runs on your trip.

  • Great Scott
    • If you’re looking for bragging rights, Great Scott is the place to earn them. Touted as the steepest run at Snowbird, this expert-only slope offers an adrenaline-pumping drop paired with the kind of breathtaking views only found at the very top of the resort. This is accessed off the Cirque Traverse which can be accessed from the Aerial Tram.
  • Silver Fox
    • Powder hounds and seasoned skiers flock to Silver Fox, also accessible from the Cirque Traverse. With technical turns and a dramatic, unpredictable layout, it rewards anyone looking to push their skills while soaking in panoramic alpine views.
  • Thunderbowl
    • For the hidden gem experience, head to Thunderbowl. This one takes some work to access. Hug the tree line off the Gad 2 Chairlift towards Red Lens Line and you’ll find it. If you want untouched powder then it’s worth the effort.

Mineral Basin

Mineral Basin area of Snowbird from the top of the Mineral Basin Chairlift

Mineral Basin is the backside of Snowbird and my favorite part of the mountain.

There are two lifts, Baldy and Mineral Basin. Baldy leads up to the Alta interconnect if you want to go onto the Alta side.

This is the side of the mountain where the sun shines longer and the slightly melted snow is awesome on a cold powder day. There are tree runs, some off piste, chutes, and groomers to choose from.

The most adventurous path is to take Path to Paradise over the Bookends Traverse to the Bookends Bowl. From here it’s a steep, straight shot to the bottom of the Mineral Basin chairlift to do it all over again.

The Peruvian Tunnel

Ever dreamt of skiing through a mountain? At Snowbird, it’s possible. The Peruvian Tunnel is a one-of-a-kind 600-foot tunnel blasting through the mountain itself.

Go from Peruvian Gulch on the front side of the mountain to Mineral Basin on the back side. You’ll get easy access to Mineral Basin’s sunny, wide black diamond slopes.

Riding through the tunnel’s magic carpet itself is an incredibly cool experience. This is more than a ride. This is a quick trip through a ski museum full of artifacts and history of winter sports. In a few minutes you’ll be greeted with sunshine on the backside of Snowbird, the Mineral Basin area.

Après Ski & Surrounding Area

On Mountain & Village

Little Cottonwood Canyon is known for the best skiing in the Salt Lake City area, not necessarily for nightlife. The village is rather small but there are still some quality options for après-ski. For a more vibrant and lively late-night scene, you’ll need to venture into Park City or downtown Salt Lake City. However if want a more laid back vibe you can relax and unwind in the Snowbird village area after a day on the slopes.

Despite the Utah’s reputation for strict alcohol laws, the reality is far more modern and accommodating than many assume. Since 2009, Utah has eased many of its alcohol restrictions, and you can find plenty of fantastic spots to toast a successful ski day around the Snowbird village.

Après-Ski Hotspots at Snowbird

You can start your evening at The Tram Club, a cozy hangout with a relaxed vibe, excellent cocktails, and shareable plates to satisfy your post-ski hunger. If craft beer is your thing, be sure to stop by The Forklift, where you can enjoy local brews alongside hearty comfort food.

If you a more sophisticated experience head to The Aerie, located on the top floor of The Cliff Lodge. This place has stunning views of the canyon a locally-inspired menu, and an extensive wine list, it’s a must for a more sophisticated après-ski experience.

Expand Your Après-Ski to Alta

Alta Ski Resort, Snowbird’s neighboring resort, also offers a small but inviting après-ski scene. Their premier spots are Goldminer’s Daughter or the Alta Peruvian Lodge.

For those exploring both resorts, the après-ski energy flows easily across the border (more on accessing Alta below). These destinations perfectly complement each other, so don’t hesitate to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Alta Ski Resort-Snowbird’s Skiable Neighbor

Snowbird and Alta have a unique relationship. Both offer their distinct charm—Snowbird is known for its deep powder and steep runs, while Alta is deeply rooted in ski culture with a nostalgic, skiing-only focus (snowboarders are not allowed at Alta).

You can use your IKON Pass to make the most of both resorts for 7 days, or consider purchasing the Alta-Snowbird pass, which gives you full access to the combined 4,700 acres of skiable terrain. Not only will you experience more variety, but you’ll also gain access to unique off-the-beaten-path runs that might become your favorite.

Salt Lake City

Best Apres Ski in Salt Lake City: Local Cuisine and Breweries

Salt Lake City has a vibrant food and drink scene as well. You can find breweries and farm to table restaurants throughout the city. Uinta Brewing Co. and Squatters Pub Brewery have a cozy atmosphere with some hoppy craft beers.

Hog Wallow Pub

If you’re you’re looking to venture into Salt Lake City after skiing go to Cottonwood Heights and check out the Hog Wallow Pub. Known for its welcoming ambiance, excellent drinks, live music, pool tables and outdoor fire pits, Hog Wallow is a quintessential après-ski escape. Enjoy a delicious burger, sandwich, wings, or their famous fried pickles while warming up by the fire and listening to live music.

Antelope Island

If you love hiking, birdwatching, scenic views, or wildlife, Antelope Island is a must-visit. Located in the Great Salt Lake, Antelope Island State Park offers a unique experience with stunning landscapes.. The island is home to 500-700 bison roaming freely, and its scenic hiking trails offer breathtaking views of the Great Salt Lake and Utah mountains.

Winter brings a peaceful atmosphere, with fewer visitors and plenty of opportunities for quiet reflection. At night, Antelope Island becomes a stargazing haven. With dark skies, it offers incredible views of stars and galaxies.

Temple Square

Temple Square is the heart of Salt Lake City and an iconic piece of the city’s culture. This 10-acre historical site features the majestic Salt Lake Temple and other significant landmarks that are rich in history and architecture. While there be sure to get the tour of The Tabernacle and its world class acoustics. You can literally hear a sewing drop on the pulpit from 150 feet away. The craftsmanship, history, and cultural will be a memorable stop during your day off the slopes.
