“Standing atop Lone Peak feels like the Montana wilderness is unfolding in front of you, inviting you to explore”

Why it’s awesome

Big Sky’s Lone Peak is infamous. The Lone Peak Tram carries up to 75 skiers to the summit of Lone Mountain. At the top you’ll find views 360 degree views of Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho as well as Yellowstone National Park. You’ll find the gnarliest “triple black diamond” terrain coming down Big Couloir. Big Sky defines triple black diamond as “exposure to uncontrollable falls along a steep, continuous pitch, route complexity, and high consequence terrain.” Which pretty much means don’t fall on these runs, be careful, and have a lot of fun.

You’ll also find expert gullies down through the bowl if you want to loop the Lone Peak Tram or go off the backside of the mountain to take black and double black runs and glades to loop the Dakota or Sledhorn lifts. Make sure your lift ticket has tram access, IKON, Mountain Collective, and other ski passes may not allow access.

For families, Big Sky offers high-quality ski and snowboard lessons tailored to kids and adults. The Big Sky Snowsports School provides expert instructors and programs for all ages, ensuring everyone can improve their skills. The resort’s Lone Peak Playhouse daycare service offers a safe and engaging environment for little ones, giving parents the freedom to explore the slopes worry-free. Outside of Lone Peak the terrain is fairly moderate to intermediate, you will never be short of options.

In 2021 Big Sky, and Boyne Resorts, pledged to be net zero carbon emissions by 2030. Which includes powering all operations with 100% renewable energy, energy efficient upgrades to buildings, adding onsite renewables, and upgrading to most energy efficient lift systems. Big Sky among other resorts is contributing its part to the sustainability of the ski industry.

Après Ski

There are several dining and après-ski options right at the base of Big Sky Resort, with most restaurants and bars located in and around the Big Sky Mountain Village. The Montana Jack is a good for burgers, craft beers, and casual après-ski vibes, while places like The Carabiner offers upscale dining with mountain views.

For more luxury dining check out the Saddle Peak Lodge and the restaurants within the Summit Hotel for exceptional meals that will hit the spot after a day on the slopes.

You can also venture into Big Sky Town Center, about 10–15 minutes away. The town is a blend of rustic Montana charm with elevated luxury and is growing rapidly. If your hotel does not offer an area shuttle you can likely find a ride with the Skyline Bus. The town offers a relaxed atmosphere with a variety of local restaurants, breweries, and shops. For dining, options range from Thai cuisine to Gourmet Pizza. Stroll down Town Center Avenue to find art galleries, boutiques, and live music events.

Check out the Big Sky Town Center Events Calendar to find winter activities, festivals, live music and much more. The calendar has events around town with many being hosted at the Montage, Big Sky, The Wilson Hotel, or downtown.

For a real treat head up Highway 64 to the Horn & Cantle at Lone Mountain Ranch where they pride themselves on locally grown and sourced ingredients from Montana. Their gamey menu will have you craving a Bison short rib or Elk meatballs long after you’re gone.

Please note that it is difficult to find Ubers and Lyfts around Big Sky, it is best that ensure you can ride the bus, have your own vehicle, or an hotel shuttle available.

Yellowstone National Park

The West entrance of the world famous Yellowstone National Park is approximately 1 hour drive from Big Sky Resort. There are wildlife and activity tours which leave out of the Big Sky area.

You can day trip the Yellowstone Lower Loop yourself or with a private driver. Drive from the Madison Junction area, and observe the lower geyser basin and Midway Geyser Basin. The next stop is Old Faithful where there is also a lodge you can eat lunch. After seeing Old Faithful, which erupts every 45-90 minutes, drive to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, take photos at Lookout Point before finalizing the loop at the Canyon Village. You will still drive through West Yellowstone on the way to Big Sky and it is worth checking out.

The North entrance of Yellowstone National Park is approximately 100 miles or about 2 hour drive from the Bozeman Yellowstone Airport (BZN). Making a dual ski and Yellowstone trip is extremely feasible with either a few days on the front or back of the ski trip spent in Bozeman.

There are numerous tours which leave out of Bozeman. You can enjoy the stunning scenery while dog sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, or on a guided tour. If you are driving yourself be sure to check the road conditions and park advisories prior to leaving.
